When I headed off to college in 1962, my plan was to finish four years and become a teacher. But life had a very different plan for me.
During my junior year at Arizona State, I married my high school sweetheart. To help us save money, I began working full-time while attending school part-time, which put me behind my original schedule. I didn’t mind, though, because it allowed my wife to graduate on time.
After she finished school, I returned to full-time classes. Just as things seemed to be getting back on track, I was drafted into the Vietnam War. I had never pictured myself in the armed forces, but I chose to embrace the path and applied to Officer Candidate School with the U.S. Air Force. My plans changed again when the military examiner determined I had “bad feet,” which disqualified me from service.
At that point, I realized I hadn’t made a backup plan for my future. Fortunately, Arizona State was opening a new law school right as I was considering my next steps. With encouragement from my father, I decided to apply, and that decision set me on the path I’ve followed ever since.

“Life is full of surprises. I work to protect my clients from the bad ones so they can spend more time focusing on the good.”
The journey that brought me into the legal profession was nothing like what I first imagined for my future. Still, the experiences along the way taught me a great deal about life and, eventually, about law. The biggest lesson I carried forward was simple but powerful: life is unpredictable.
Fortunately, the unexpected turns I faced ultimately led me to a career that has been the right fit all along. As an attorney, whether practicing estate planning, probate law, or criminal defense, I have the privilege of using my skills to make a difference in people’s lives. Each day, I have the opportunity to educate, console, and guide individuals through real challenges. On the best days, those who arrive with concerns leave feeling heard, understood, and in a stronger position than before.
It would be unrealistic to say that every possibility in life can be planned for, that’s simply not true. But after more than 45 years in the legal profession, I can safely share three truths:
1. Thorough planning goes a long way.
2. With a strong support system, you can make it through even the toughest of times.
3. Getting the right kind of help can make all the difference in protecting what matters most to you.
